We formed Utterworks after recognising the incredible advances in AI and Machine Learning over the last couple of years, specifically in the field of Natural Language Processing. The trickle-down from computer vision with the use of deep learning, transformer-based neural networks, consumer cloud computing with GPU and now TPU performance and new techniques like Transfer Learning have meant that NLP is now capable of near-human levels of language understanding (and it’s constantly improving).
We’re focused on the ways in which this technology can be put to use solving problems in both a business and social context. If data is the new oil, then unstructured data are the hard to reach, unconventional deposits and NLP is the advanced drilling technique to get at it (maybe stretching the analogy there a bit)
We also identified that the market in this area was saturated by Chatbot platforms, typically using older generation NLP technologies like “bag of words”, focused on simple Q&A, producing very unsatisfactory results, and generally giving NLP a bad name. We felt strongly that there was an opportunity to move new NLP from the realms of academia and data science to a broader audience and in doing so open up major opportunities to add value.
We’re particularly excited about the potential of new NLP in customer service. Allowing companies to think of their interactions with customers as rich, intuitive conversations across any channel
